THE SUPA-DUPA BIG BAND BONANZA WEEKEND FEAT. NYJO

Between the 16th – 18th September 2016 the Doncaster Youth Jazz Association (DYJA) and Doncaster Music Education Hub in partnership with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) organised a weekend of jazz activities ranging from workshops in schools, drop in sessions and advanced tutorials, as well as the Supa Dupa Big Band bonanza event on Sunday 18th September. The weekend was designed to appeal to a regional audience.

The objectives of the weekend were, inter alia, to boost interest in the jazz genre across the region (whether a jazz lover or wanting to learn) and to engage with young learners and provide opportunities to pick up an instrument and play.

Over 100 young people in the Doncaster area were engaged in a weekend of jazz activities ranging from workshops in schools, drop in sessions and advanced tutorials funded by the Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation. This weekend was in association with the Doncaster Youth Jazz Association and National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

They spoke enthusiastically about hearing the band play and the top tips especially breathing like a bow! One of our saxophonists wants to be a musician and I’ve since met with his dad to look at the next steps.
