The Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation supported NYJO across a number of different areas for the academic year 2016/2017. Our help was focused on the NYJO Academy Jazz Ensemble (NYJO’s most junior training band, led by trumpeter Gemma Buckenham), the provision of bursaries for NYJO Academy attendees from disadvantaged backgrounds, and also sponsorship of NYJO’s upcoming collaboration with the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra in September 2016.

Since the NYJO Academy JE received the funding from the Ronnie Scott’s Foundation, the JE has continued to flourish. They received a record number of applicants and were running at full capacity. The participants range in age from 8-20, with ever-increasing diversity in terms of gender and ethnicity.

For most of their participants, the NYJO Academy JE was their first experience of playing in a big band, and in many in cases the first experience they have of playing jazz. The participants hailed from all areas of London, the home counties, Sussex, Hampshire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

We are very proud that the Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation has chosen to support NYJO, the pre-eminent jazz educator in the UK. With this grant, the Foundation has underlined its strong commitment to developing the next generation of UK jazz musicians; how inspiring for the young musicians in the NYJO Academy Jazz Ensemble that their band is underpinned by Europe’s greatest jazz club!’
