In June 2018, over 200 young people attended six ‘National Youth Orchestras of Scotland Jazz’ workshops across Scotland. Fully-funded by the RSCF, the workshops were free-of-charge, access-level introductory sessions, predominantly targeting areas lacking in significant musical provision or featuring high numbers of young people living in high-SIMD (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation) postcodes. These non-auditioned, half day sessions were by led by NYOS Jazz Ambassadors (pre-professional alumni of the NYOS Jazz Orchestra), with support from the NYOS Jazz Directors.

The workshops allowed young people from across key areas in Scotland access to high-quality, expert-led music projects in their own communities. Indeed, 44% of participants lived in areas ranking highest on the Scottish
Index of Multiple Deprivations.

NYOS is sincerely grateful to Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation for supporting Jazz Workshops in 2018. Ensuring NYOS is accessible to young people from all backgrounds is fundamental to our work. These workshops allow young musicians from across Scotland to access high-quality, expert-led music projects in their own communities and significantly broaden the opportunities for young people to take part in our work. This would not be possible without the generous support of the Foundation.
