We were proud to support New Orleans inspired ‘World Heart Beat Music Academy’s Second Line’ programme for the academic year 2017/18. In 19th century New Orleans, jazz brought together diverse ethnic and racial groups, who found common cause through their love of music.

Inspired by this, World Heart Beat Music Academy’s Second Line programme engaged 100 students aged 8-24 from a range of cultural backgrounds in an exciting, accessible and free New Orleans jazz music programme delivered at WHB, and reached a further 900 young people through workshops in special education and mainstream schools.

This programme involved masterclasses in trombone, trumpet and percussion; ‘big band’ practice sessions leading to Second Line Parades on the streets of Wandsworth; public performances at professional venues such as the 606 Club; and rich informative sessions exploring jazz history and culture, and the impact it has on contemporary music.

Dates: Sept 2017 – July 2018

Location: Wandsworth

Age Group: 8 to 24

Ronnie Scotts have been an invaluable partner to World Heart Beat and we have been so pleased to have benefitted from how Ronnie Scotts find original and fantastic ways to support children learning music and jazz at grass roots not only financially  but also in other ways such holding a musical instrument amnesty so that young musicians can have instruments to take home and practise with, through their workshop days which range from big band days or orchestral days where young musicians play fusion, Cuban, Indian, South African music to name just a touch of what is covered.
